Common Mold Questions

How much does mold removal cost?

It depends on how much mold there is, what it's growing on, how hard it is to reach, and whether the moisture source needs to be fixed. Small jobs cost less than jobs that need large areas of drywall or flooring removed. The only reliable number is a written estimate after the problem is looked at. Calling us costs nothing.

Can I clean mold myself?

For small spots, often yes. The EPA says you can usually clean an area smaller than about 10 square feet yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles, scrub hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry them well. Larger areas, mold after a lot of water damage, or mold in your AC system should be handled by a professional.

How fast does mold grow?

Fast. The EPA advises drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. In Alton's hot, humid weather, wet drywall and carpet that sit for a few days are at real risk. The sooner the water is stopped and the area is dried, the smaller the problem stays.

Do you test for mold?

No. We focus on mold removal and drying. Texas law keeps mold testing and mold removal separate on the same project, so when testing or a written protocol is needed, a separate licensed mold assessment consultant does it. When mold can be seen, testing often isn't needed to start the cleanup.

Is the work licensed?

Yes. Mold remediation for our customers is done by a contractor licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). You can ask for the license number and check it at tdlr.texas.gov before work starts.

Don't

Don't spray bleach and call it done.

Don't touch mold with bare hands.

Don't paint or caulk over mold.

Don't run the AC if you think it has mold in it.

Don't point fans at moldy areas.

Don't mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.

Why not bleach? The EPA says bleach isn't recommended for routine mold cleanup. It can't reach mold that has

grown into drywall, wood, or carpet, and dead mold can still cause allergy problems. The mold has to be removed and the moisture fixed.
